was the attempt by various members of the Soviet Government, who disliked Soviet leader mikhail Gorbachev's move towards more democratic policies, to take control of the country from Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev. Ultimately they bit the hand that feed them because Gorbachev gave the freedom in the first place.
