East Germany was a satellite state of the Soviet Union. Thousands of demonstrators demanded more freedom during the fall of 1989, and Honecker wanted to kill them, but was overruled and replaced by Eron Krenz. Following this the Berlin Wall was finally opened and free elections ensued. Lastly, east and west Germany were made one with Kohl as the chancellor.
